50,000 Working People Petition Bernie Sanders to a Town Hall to Discuss Starting a New Party. Will he Attend?
Washington D.C. — Two weeks ago, Draft Bernie for a People’s Party sent the following letter of invitation directly to Sen. Sanders and to his staff. Draft Bernie offered to accommodate Sanders’ schedule and select another date if he cannot attend the Town Hall on Sept. 9th.
The Senator has yet to say whether he will acknowledge and meet with his supporters.
On behalf of the many thousands of working people who have been inspired by our movement to Draft Bernie for a People’s Party, Dr. Cornel West and I would like to invite you to join us for a town hall on Sept. 9th at American University.
Over the past six months, I’ve had the privilege of working with thousands of your most dedicated and talented supporters and volunteers. Working people of all ages, colors, and genders who led their communities in the campaign to elect you president. These are the grassroots leaders who hosted canvasses, phone banked into every state, made social media an organizing hub, and greeted you at clutches. They gave you countless hours and funds that they often could not spare.
Your campaign gave them a common vision and purpose. Now they are united once more in their conviction that our nation needs a new genuinely-progressive party, and that you can create it for us and generations to come. Together, they are extending thousands of hands in invitation to the town hall, a conversation about our shared future as a country.
At the town hall we will discuss one of the greatest questions facing our movement: should we continue our efforts to reform the Democratic Party, or should we launch the new party that the large majority of Americans are calling for?
Please join us for…
The Draft Bernie Town Hall
Saturday, September 9 • 8:00-9:30 pm
American University • Washington College of Law
The town hall will be the feature event of the three-day Convergence Conference that is bringing together hundreds of progressive activists and many organizations to deliberate the same question. Our state and regional field leaders are hosting sister gatherings in nearly every state, where progressives will watch the town hall and participate in local discussions.
At 3 pm on Friday, September 8, we will deliver 50,000 signatures asking you to start a people’s party and inviting you to the town hall the next day. It would mean the world to your supporters if you were there to personally accept their petition and invitation to the town hall.
Draft Bernie for a People’s Party
At the Town Hall, renowned intellectual Dr. Cornel West, socialist Seattle city councilwoman Kshama Sawant, political commentator Jimmy Dore, and Draft Bernie founder Nick Brana will discuss whether progressives should continue reforming the Democratic Party or create a new party free of corporate money and influence. Brana is the former National Political Outreach Coordinator with Bernie 2016 and former Electoral Manager with Our Revolution.
The conference begins with a rally on the National Mall along 7th St. at 1:30 pm on Friday Sept 8. The rally will be followed by the delivery of the Draft Bernie petition to Sanders. The weekend includes a live comedy special on Friday night with Jimmy Dore, Lee Camp, Tim Black, Stef Zamorano, Ron Placone, and John F. O’Donnell. Saturday and Sunday will consist of plenaries and workshops on Medicare for all, democratic socialism, invigorating the American student movement, fighting racism, defeating the right wing, election integrity, progressive prospects in 2018 and 2020, and much more.
Many of Sanders’ delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention are joining the call on him to start a major new party. Last week, they addressed a heartfelt 2-minute video to the Senator.
Progressives across the country are waiting to see if Bernie Sanders will sit down with the working people who fought and sacrificed for him in 2016.

The People’s Convergence Conference is just 2 weeks away! Jimmy Dore, Tim Black and Lee Camp will help us kick it off Friday, Sept. 8, by attending the rally on the National Mall at 1:30pm – 2:30pm and delivering the petition signatures to Bernie’s office at 3:00pm. That night Jimmy will do a live version of his show. At the Conference, the plenaries and workshops will include a variety of topics. In addition, we’ll show Josh Fox’s film Awake, A Dream from Standing Rock.
Promotion for the Conference and Town Hall includes an article by Mike Sainato and Nick’s invitation published in the Huffington Post. We also have the delegate video compiled by Jeff Sanders and released Thursday along with the delegate letter signed by hundreds of Bernie’s delegates. Check them out on the DB National Facebook page!
We’ve begun sending out the radius emails for the Town Hall sister gatherings. If you’d like to plan a watch party, please read our Agenda for Town Hall Sister Gatherings and post your watch party on the Events map.
We have three Facebook events posted: the Town Hall, the rally and petition delivery, and the People’s Convergence Conference. Please share to your own FB pages every day so that they stay at the top. Also, go to the Conference website and share it to your networks.
At the petition delivery, we’ll present Bernie with an oversized $160,000 check from the Crowdpac pledged from people who are counting on Bernie to stand with us in this movement that affects the futures of all us. Please join us at the Conference!

Thursday night’s call began with a dedication to Heather Heyer. Nick then announced that Jimmy Dore will be moderating the Town Hall in D.C. Register if you’d like to join us at the People’s Convergence Conference! If you can’t make it to D.C., plan on attending or hosting one of our sister gatherings around the country. You can find them on our Events map. If you’d like to plan a watch party, use our Town Hall Sister Gatherings guide. These sister gatherings will form the basis for local chapters of the people’s party.
Our guest speaker, Calvin Priest, a national committee member of Socialist Alternative, one of the three Conference sponsors, emphasized the importance of organizing a people’s party for working people free of corporate control.
We continue to add more national, state, and regional leaders at DB! Besides organizing sister gatherings in many states, we keep a watch on cities where Bernie is speaking. Our leaders are turning out volunteers to greet Bernie with signs, placards, and strong DB voices to convince him that he is needed at the Town Hall! Check out his speaking stops at our Events map and join us. Call Bernie’s Senate offices and tell his staffer or scheduler that we’re holding a spot for him at the Town Hall.
All petition signatures have to be entered at the end of the day on Tuesday, Sept. 5, so that we can print and box them up on Sept. 6. We’ll deliver them to Bernie on Friday, Sept. 8. RSVP for the rally and petition delivery. See you in D.C.!
