‘Draft Bernie for a People’s Party’ Seeks to Recruit Sanders to Start a New Political Party, Not to Run for President in 2020
Following our high-profile presence at The People’s Summit in Chicago last weekend, there has been great media interest in our movement, and with it, some confusion about our mission. We seek to draft Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) to launch a new progressive political party. We are commonly referred to as ‘Draft Bernie’ for short and are not advocating for or against Sanders running for president in 2020.
For all of the reasons cited in our briefing sent to Sanders, the Democratic Party is structurally incapable of becoming a people’s party. The only way to defeat Donald Trump and the Republican agenda is to start a new party for the progressive majority.
Polls show that most Americans want a major new party. Starting one is something that Sanders is uniquely positioned to do. During his presidential primary campaign, Sanders built a national volunteer and donor infrastructure of millions of people. He also popularized progressive policies and created a progressive electoral coalition. Rather than dissolve his campaign infrastructure, Draft Bernie believes that Sanders should turn it into a permanent people’s party.
The movement for a people’s party took it to the next level at the People’s Summit this weekend! The action began with a large gathering of Draft Bernie supporters from across the country on Friday morning, where Jimmy Dore lead the chant, “Draft Bernie! Draft Bernie!” It culminated with hundreds of enthusiastic supporters cheering for Bernie to start a new party in front of thousands of attendees and hundreds of thousands of livestream viewers back home. On this call, we recapped the weekend’s remarkable events, looped listeners into organizing, and discussed how we will move boldly into a people’s party. Brian Jones, the executive director of the Justice Party, joined us and shared his wealth of knowledge on progressive third parties. RoseAnn DeMoro Announces her Support for the Draft Bernie Movement at the People’s Summit
CHICAGO — To an eruption of enthusiastic cheers, RoseAnn DeMoro took the stage at the packed Arie Crown theater and announced her support for the movement to Draft Bernie for a People’s Party on Saturday. DeMore is the executive director of National Nurses United, the leading organizers of the People’s Summit and a major union that backed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) for president.
Thousands watched as Sanders condemned a Democratic Party that has not embraced his progressive platform. Draft Bernie supporters waved red rally signs and cheered throughout his speech with calls for him to launch a new party.
Afterwards, DeMoro joined Sanders on stage and announced her support for starting a new party with Sanders. “I want to thank all of the Draft Bernie people. I’m with you,” she exclaimed, pointing into the crowd to great fanfare. “Nurses, are we with them,” she asked, as the crowd erupted in cheers again. DeMoro then turned to Sanders, “I always say: ‘heroes aren’t made, they’re cornered.’”
“We’re honored to have the support of such a bold progressive and champion in the fight for universal health care,” said Nick Brana, Draft Bernie founder. “RoseAnn joins the rapidly growing movement to build a new party for working people.”
Sen. Nina Turner, who tweets favorably and often about Draft Bernie, interviewed Brana on her new show with the Real News Network on Friday. Turner recently discussed the growing call for a third party on CNN’s State of the Union.
On Wednesday, Draft Bernie released a 15-page briefing sent directly to Sen. Sanders. on the feasibility and necessity of creating a party for the progressive majority.
Comedian and popular YouTube news commentator Jimmy Dore joined us on the call this week to share why he thinks the timing is right for Draft Bernie and to comment on how the current political arena is supporting the movement. Carol and Randi gave an update on our new event map, our Facebook week of action, plans for the People’s Summit, and more. Listen to past episodes of our weekly calls, learn more about Draft Bernie, sign up to volunteer, contribute, and find our petition at DraftBernie.org.

Draft Bernie For A People’s Party Releases Briefing Sent to Sen. Bernie Sanders
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahead of the People’s Summit this weekend in Chicago, Draft Bernie for a People’s Party has released a briefing sent directly to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on the feasibility and necessity of creating a new progressive party.
“The facts and figures in the briefing show that a new party is the only way to defeat Trump and the Republican agenda,” said Draft Bernie founder and director Nick Brana, the former national political outreach coordinator for Bernie 2016 and former electoral manager for Our Revolution. “This is the case that has convinced Sanders surrogates and working people across the country to join the movement to Draft Bernie.”
President Trump’s unpopularity and Sanders’ monumental efforts to expand the Democratic Party should be generating a surge in the party’s membership. But polls reveal an alarming trend: since the 2016 general election, affiliation with the Democratic Party is declining while the Republican Party is holding steady. Democrats are increasingly becoming independents.
The American people are leading the way to an independent alternative to the major parties. Instead of struggling against the progressive current in an effort to reform an establishment party, Sanders should swim with the progressive current and create the new party that the majority of Americans want.
If Sanders starts a party for the progressive majority, it could supplant the Democrats in a few short years. Much like Abraham Lincoln’s Republicans replaced the Whig Party in just four years.
The 15-page briefing was written by activists, academics and former Sanders staffers. It can be read in its entirety here.
Draft Bernie’s Jonathan Martin, Nicholas Brana, Bayo Sharp, joined Araquel Bloss of Progressive Independent Party and Brian Jones of the Justice Party in a panel discussion at Left Forum in New York City. The panel topic was titled “The Revolution Must Go On! Can Berners Build a New Party That Wins?”.
The movement for a people’s party is on a roll! We discuss updates like Nina Turner’s exciting appearance on CNN this past week, where she spoke about how Americans are calling for a third party. We always have way more questions than we can answer on our weekly calls, so this week we had a Draft Bernie Q&A Day, where we devoted the second half of the call to answering your questions. Learn more about Draft Bernie, sign up to volunteer, contribute, and find our petition at DraftBernie.org.
